Urban legends are kind of like mind viruses; even though we know they are probably not true, we often can't resist the urge to retell them (and thus infect other gullible "hosts") because they make for such good storytelling. Most urban legends have some basis in fact, which only makes them harder to stamp out. Unfortunately, many pointers and tips about Java performance tuning are a lot like urban legends -- someone, somewhere, passes on a "tip" that has (or had) some basis in fact, but through its continued retelling, has lost what truth it once contained. This month, Brian Goetz examines some of these urban performance legends and sets the record straight. Imperial Software Technology (IST) today announced the launch of its Motif to Java Migration Solution, a complete and cost effective solution for the rapid and automated conversion of legacy C/C++ X/Motif based applications to the Java Platform.
Based on a blend of tools and services centered on IST’s X-Designer and Visaj development environments together with a suite of in-house translation tools, this migration solution significantly speeds the ordinarily complex Motif to Java migration process. This unique technology addresses the conversion to Java of both the application’s Motif-based GUI front-end and the back-end toolkit dependant code significantly reducing the amount of re-coding work required to complete such a migration.

YASU Technologies J2EE, XML component provider announced the availability of QuickRules 1.0 General Availability version for evaluation and license. QuickRules is mainly targetted at Finance, Healthcare, Telecom and Mobile startups and the licensing is very OEM friendly.
Business rules represent business policies and are present in applications resulting from: corporate charters, marketing strategies, pricing policies, product and service offerings, customer relationship management practices and regulatory forces, in short everything to do with the competitive landscape. Business Rules change with changes in the competitive landscape resulting in modifications to the embedded rules in applications. Designing applications with such flexibility requires a well-planned business rule-centric approach that allows separation of business rules from application code.
QuickRules aims to solve these problems for ISVs, application architects and service providers. QuickRules is especially helpful in network management scenarios (event, alert or trap correlations), financial applications (changing business policies to suit regulatory changes), healthcare and personalization (one-to-one customer interaction using messaging).
The core QuickRules Runtime Engine is available as an Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) with support for some of the leading application servers. This small footprint EJB can be easily integrated into EJB-based applications that run on J2EE-compliant Application Servers. Currently WebLogic 5.1 (service pack 6 and above) is supported in the packaged version and it has been tested on Websphere, Inprise, JBoss(packages available from support).
Key Features:
1. Intuitive IDE: QuickRules toolkit comes with an IDE that is intuitive and enables Rule definition, modelling and deployment. Rules can be defined in an english like mapping of business objects
2. Web Editor API: Hot deployment, modification and deployment of rules is possible using web editor templates provided as part of the toolkit. These templates can be integrated within applications that use QuickRules Rules Engine.
3. Runtime Engine: The Runtime is a small, scalable, high-performance engine that is easily embeddable into EJB, J2EE applications.
